NICOSIA - The police have completed a feasibility study for the installation of closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) in strategic locations around Cyprus to deter crime in town centres, main streets and other public areas.

Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou said Cyprus was not just the only country in the EU 27 to not operate an effective CCTV system but the only country in Europe.

“It is unacceptable that town squares, parks and other busy public places that are vulnerable to crime are not being monitored,” said Papageorgiou.
