NICOSIA - Employees at the Civil Registry and Migration Department Thursday staged an impromptu strike, in protest against plans to move them to the new buildings in the grounds of the old Nicosia General Hospital.
The employees protested outside the House of Representatives, handing over a memo, while waiting for a meeting with the House Health Committee members.
The strike affected hundreds of people who waited for long hours to be dealt with not knowing about it.
Interior Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis said the strike was illegal, since a dialogue had taken place been the Civil Servants’ Union (Pasidy) and his Ministry’s Permanent Secretary and the questions of strikers were answered.
“The conditions in which they work today are poor and the problems will be solved once and for all, when the Ministry moves to the new buildings that are under construction,” said Sylikiotis.
