Turkey yesterday defied EU calls to open its ports to Cyprus traffic despite European pressure to do so as its accession bid is up for review in mid-December.

President Christofias has issued a warning to the other 26 EU leaders that if Ankara reneges its obligations towards Cyprus, his government want not stand idly by.

And the European Parliament yesterday urged Turkey to proceed with “full and non-discriminatory” implementation of the Ankara protocol which includes the opening of Turkish ports to Cypriot traffic.

A resolution on enlargement called on Ankara to actively contribute to a solution, but stopped short of suggesting sanctions.

Cyprus has made it clear that it will block Turkey’s rendezvous with Europe if Brussels fails to cajole Ankara into implementing the trade accord.

But Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was adamant that Turkey would not budge on the issue.

He said Turkey will not open its ports and airspace to Cyprus until there is a reunification deal.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt renewed the EU's call during his Ankara visit aimed at discussing the country's stalled progress.
