LONDON – President Christofias has called on members of the British Parliament to exert pressure on Turkey to abandon policies of partition and expansion and cooperate constructively towards a just, functional and viable solution.

The President made the statement during an address at the opening of the Photographic Exhibition “Faces of Cyprus” by Doros Partasides, at the House of Commons, in London on Wednesday evening.

In his address, President Christofias said that “Doros Partasides has taken a close look at his native homeland and for years the subject of his work has been an exploration of Cyprus and its people, a small selection of which is shown here today.”

He said that Doros Partasides’ work such as “Cyprus 1974: Days of Disaster”, “The Portraits of Makarios” and the documentary “The Green Line” for Channel 4 of British television are invaluable records of history and sentiment; a classical tragedy acted out in real life when the coup d’ etat and the Turkish invasion deeply scarred Cyprus and its people.

These photographs, presented widely in Cyprus and here in Britain, are a record of actual events and real people, which informed the public and politicians abroad of the violent destruction and devastation suffered by a small defenceless island, the President remarked.

He went on to add that the images of the events in 1974 are also a road map for Cypriots, tracing the calamities of the past and giving us hope for the future. “Even when viewing his photos of fear and disaster, for me, Doros Partasides is above all the Photographer of Hope”.
