NICOSIA – President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has said the Greek Cypriot side is not seeking anything more than securing the rights of the people of Cyprus, just as they are secured for all peoples. In his intervention at the 4th Conference of the Presidents of the European Small States’ Parliaments, that is being held in Nicosia, Garoyian repeated that the Greek Cypriot side is seeking a solution that is based on international law, Security Council resolutions, EU principles and the acquis communautaire as well as the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979, a solution that will respect the human rights of all Cypriots and will secure the viability of the state. He also said that international law is an agreed common code of conduct between states in the international arena, and is based on principles and values, which aim to maintain international peace and stability. At the same time, he expressed the view that international law was created and developed to remove the possibility of one-sided action on the part of powerful countries and for small states to have an effective and legislative protection.“For this reason, small states are fervent supporters of principles of international law and respect of human rights”, he said, adding that the Republic of Cyprus’ support towards principles is a fact. However, Garoyian remarked that not all states abide by these positions in relation to respect of international law.Turkey, he added, is one of the countries, which does not abide by these principles and in Cyprus there is a mass violation of principles of law and human rights by Turkey. He expressed the hope that small states will ally in favour of maintaining international peace, stability and respect of sovereignty and territorial integrity and against submitting to geostrategic interests, which impose the law of the powerful states.
