NICOSIA - Cyprus Europa League representatives Omonia have sent out a clear message to their nearest rivals ahead of the new league season by signing five new players, including Greece international Christos Patsatzoglou.
Omonia are gunning to win their first league title since 2003 whilst at the same time follow in the footsteps of Anorthosis Famagusta and become the first Cypriot team to qualify for the group stages of a major European competition.

The Nicosia club, who finished runners-up in the first division that just passed behind bitter rivals APOEL, have announced the signing of Greek defenders Patsatzoglou and Christos Karipidis from Olympiacos and Hearts respectively, Cypriot attacking midfielder George Efrem and Anorthosis midfielder George Panayi.

Club chairman Miltiades Neophytou told reporters at a news conference Tuesday that his club had also signed on 32-year-old Polish forward Maciej Zurawski from Greek side Larissa. Zurawski, who is believed to signed a two-year deal, is also a former player of Wisla Krakow and Celtic.

“I would like the supporters to know that I will give my very all to Omonia to help the team achieve its targets”, said 30-year-old Greece international defender Patsatzoglou. “I have been fortunate in my career to play for a team that was always competing for titles and that is why I chose Omonia as my next stop – they are team that always challenges for silverware”.

The signing of Patsatzoglou has been described as a major coup and is the second Greek international defender on the island following last season’s arrival of Traianos Dellas at Anorthosis. Takis Lemonis’ other Greek signing, 26-year-old Karipidis, spent the last three seasons at Hearts where he was later promoted to vice captain. He played 63 times for the Scottish side scoring three times during his spell at Tynecastle.

Cypriot under-21 international Efrem rose through the youth ranks of the Arsenal Academy before the 20-year-old moved north to Rangers. Last season he was sent out on loan to Dundee. Cypriot international Panayi, 22, became the first Cypriot national to score for a Cypriot club in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League when he grabbed the second in Anorthosis’ 3-3 home draw against Inter Milan.

Patsatzoglou has agreed a four-year deal with Omonia whilst Panayi, Efrem and Karipidis have all penned three-year deals.
