PESCARA - Cyprus had a great day in athletics at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara yesterday with a gold and silver medal victory.Cyprus’ success came from champion Eleni Artymata who raced her way to victory in the 200m whilst youngster Marianna Zachariades grabbed the silver medal in the pole vault event.Artymata’s brilliant time of 23.16 was the second best ever time for Cypriot athletics with the time of 23.07 by Marilias Grigoriou still unbeaten. Artymata’s time, however, was enough to seal the qualifying standard at the upcoming World Championships in Berlin. The Cypriot sprinter left second place Sabina Veit some 29 fractions of a second behind with Italy’s Vincenza Gali finishing third.Cyprus also took to the podium in the pole vault event with Zachariades successfully leaping over the 4.45m bar with her first effort whilst at the time sealing a new Cypriot record. The previous record had been set at 4.35m in outdoor athletics and 4.41m in indoor athletics.Zachariades came within a whisker of first place but was pipped to the gold by Nicole Kyriacopoulou of Greece who managed to jump 4.50m with her third effort. The Greek athlete had needed a total of three attempts to jump the 4.35m and 4.45m mark compared to Zachariades who overcame those bars with her first attempts.Had Zachariades jumped the 4.50m bar, she would have secured a world youth record.
