PESCARA - Cyprus secured a famous victory on Tuesday at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara after the Cyprus men’s beach volleyball team defeated Turkey 2-1.Cyprus’ star duo of George Platritis and Paris Christofi overcame the challenge of Turkey’s Selcuk Sekerci and Adem Mert to win 21-18, 18-21 and 15-13 in what was tense match at the Del Mare Arena.The win also means that Cyprus have a strong chance of advancing to the quarterfinal stage after the island had previously beaten Morocco 2-1.The Turks had been backed by the Turkish national football team and Turkish swimmers who arrived at the Arena to cheer on Sekerci and Mert.Cyprus had got off to a great start in the first and after charging into a 10-6 lead held off some tough attacks from the Turks to win the first set 21-18. Some unforced errors and some good attacking displays from the opponents saw Turkey equalise in the second set before Platritis and Christofi upped their game in the third and deciding set to win the game 15-13.”We are delighted because we deservedly won a game which saw our opponents as favourites”, commented a smiling Platritis after the game. “When one takes into account the fact that Turkey has 80million people, the fact that Cyprus beat them is especially impressive.”His partner Christofi added, “We need to push on. We need to remain disciplined and focused so we can go far. Such victories can only spur us on.”Cyprus will next take on Albania and then Greece.
