DUBAI – Marcos Baghdatis continued his impressive run at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday with a win against Indian number one Somdev Devarman.
Baghdatis – who turned on the heat against eighth-seed Gilles Simon in the first round – defeated Somdev 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in one hour and 45 minutes and will now meet German Michael Berrer in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The Cypriot world number 37 defeated Somdev in the opening set but the Indian came back strongly to win the second set. Any hopes of an upset faded in the final set as Baghdatis took the game to Somdev beating him 6-1.
Baghdatis’ next opponent, Berrer, advanced at the expense of Nikolay Davydenko who was forced to retire after losing the first set of his second round clash with
The unseeded German, who is ranked 56 in the world, had come out firing, smashing down four aces in the opening game and then breaking to lead 3-1 when he forced Davydenko to hit an awkward over-the-shoulder backhand that landed in the net.
Games then went with serve until a Davydenko return landed long and sealed the 6-3 set for Berrer, and Davydenko then retired with a pre-existing injury to his left wrist.
