LARNACA - Anorthosis Famagusta will be aiming to make some more European magic this year as they kick off the new season in the inaugural UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
The Cypriot favourites in the tie, who made Cypriot football history last season by becoming the first team from the island to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, take on Luxembourg outfits UN 97 Kaerjeng in their first round qualifier in Larnaca.
Should Anorthosis beat last season’s Luxembourg Cup finalists, they will then take on Montenegro side Petrovac.
Anorthosis had finished third last season in what was a disappointing domestic season for the club that was plagued by an embezzlement allegation scandal which led to the arrest and then resignation of club chairman Andreas Pantelis.
Unrest in the dressing rooms as well as a public dispute between the club board and the coach Temuri Ketsbaia also ended with the Georgian exiting the club for better pastures at Greek Champions Olympiacos whilst the club also saw two different boards take over the club management. This also led to friction between the club and the fans.
Anorthosis will be hoping to make a fresh start under new German coach Ersnt Middendorp whilst the refugee club have also signed on ten new players.
Some of the club’s best signings include Portuguese playmaker Ricardo Fernandes - formerly of Sporting, Porto, APOEL and Metalurh Donetsk – whilst the club has also signed Nigerian striker Victor Agali, Omonia striker Cafu, goalkeeper Nemanja Supic and defender Janicio from Vitoria.
