LIMASSOL – Apollon Limassol are currently in talks with Israeli club Maccabi Haifi for South African striker Thembinkosi Fanteni. The 25-year-old, who scored 11 times in 26 games last season for the Israeli side, is currently in his home country where he helped South Africa to fourth place in the FIFA Confederations Cup. The striker was signed by Maccabi in 2007 for around 500,000 euros but the Israelis will be looking to cash in on him after some impressive performances of late for both club and country. But the financial problems have forced the club to inform the striker that he will need to take a pay cut at the club. That could leave Apollon with a window of opportunity even if that meant taking him on loan for the upcoming season. The player is bound to Maccabi until 30 June 2010 and it is highly unlikely that Apollon will find the money to buy him out of his contract. His former clubs include Ajax Cape Town – where he was rampant – and Mother City FC.
