The Nicosia Municipal Centre for Arts in cooperation with the Pieridis Foundation (Palia Elektriki) is presenting a new exhibition from June 10 entitled ‘Open Call – Space and Sculpture’.
The exhibit includes the works ‘War Fever’ by Costas Taliotis and ‘Things, witnesses!’ by Elizabeth Doering.
The artists were chosen among other 30 participants, for their originality in the use of the space of Palia Elektriki, for their interesting concept of work and also for their original idea of interaction and participation of the viewers while experiencing their work.
The Centre for Arts is hoping to establish Open Call as a yearly event, which will give the opportunity to new artists to develop their work in the space. The aim is for both the artist and the viewer to discover and enjoy modern installations in a bigger space such as that provided by Palia Elektriki.
On his piece of work, Costas Taliotis says ‘In the year 2042, Nicosia suffers from a natural disaster, and is covered in sand and thick fog. The habitants leave the city and some move to the mountains while others move to the beach. At that point a major dispute arises between two teams of architects who are trying to impose their ideas on how Nicosia should be rebuilt. It’s a war between the classic, established style within the city walls versus the non-rules abiding modern architecture. The viewers are invited to participate in the debate.’
Elizabeth Doering’s project is about items with meanings going back to maybe 30 years or more. She uses low tech machinery and additional equipment. The viewer is asked to discover the experiences and the objectives these items reveal .
The opening of the exhibition will be on Wednesday June 10 at 8pm, and will remain open through to August 2.
