Authentic French brasserie
In the words of the French Ambassador in Cyprus who was present at last week’s opening of the ‘new’; restaurant, Au Bon Plaisir could easily be a brasserie found anywhere in France. Except, it’s not in France. Instead it’s tucked away on a quiet road in Nicosia. We recently visited the new premises 9following relocation from Agios Dometios) and were pleased to find that it still retains its charm.
Set to the sounds of Edith Piaf and other French singers its successful formula is the creation of an approachable but quality menu that sticks to classic French gastronomic traditions.
The ‘new’ Au Bon Plaisir has a very familiar and cosy atmosphere set off by the red and green interior and warm wooden floor. Add to this a fine menu of authentic French dishes, made with top-quality ingredients, such as imported French Normandie beef as well as the chocolate and vanilla used in the recipes and you’re in for a delight. The brasserie permanently has wild suckling pig on its menu, as well as horse meat, oysters from Oleron (famous from Roman times), mussels, and choucroute to name just a few highlights.
In the summer you can enjoy your meal sat outside under the canapé with a delicious glass of wine or a crisp French beer.
Before visiting the brasserie, we had already decided what we were having for starters, a very fine French onion soup with cheese gratin, and the oysters which were both truly delicious. This was followed by Normandie steak, which was very tender, and steak tartar. All the basic ingredients were excellent, and are imported from France.
In the words of Gatienne (the owner) ‘you can’t make a good foie gras with local duck’. It also helps if the chef knows what he’s doing. When you order your steak medium-rare, it will arrive just as you like it and not, as with certain other ‘fine’ restaurants, almost well done.
Our wine, (selected with expert guidance from Gatienne) was the perfect accompaniment. And had any been left at the end of the night, we would have been able to take it home with us – a useful tip especially if you’re driving.
